My Story:
I was born on a mountain top in Tennessee, greenest state in the ... oh, wait a minute, that was Davey Crockett.  Actually, I was born on a mountain side in Williamson, WV.  I grew up in the little mining town of Red Jacket (our claim to fame was Buster Douglas' trainer ... you remember Buster don't you, he was the first one to beat Mike Tyson and he didn't even lose part of his ear).  I had great parents and a great childhood roaming the hills and growing up a hillbilly.  I tell people though that I was born overlooking the Promised Land and when I was 12 I got to move in (to Kentucky of course).  My dad contracted Black Lung and had to leave the mines.  We moved to Flatwoods, KY and I attended Russell High School.  I didn't know it at the time, but I lived next door to a famous person (I even babysat him and probably changed his diapers).  His name was Billy Ray Cyrus.  Thinking about it now "breaks my achy-breaky heart!"

I am the first of what I pray will be a long line of preachers.  It didn't start out that way.  After high school I promptly enrolled in and flunked out of college.  Part of the reason I didn't do so well in school was this devastatingly beautiful girl named Sharon that I had met and fell in love with.  We ended up getting married in 1968.  That was during the Vietnam War and getting drafted didn't sound like a great idea, so I joined the U.S. Navy Reserve and spent two years on active duty.  While I was away on a Med cruise, something happened to my young bride.  She fell in love with another man.  You heard me right.  She fell madly, completely head over heels in love with Jesus!  When she moved down to Charleston, SC to be with me, it was obvious we had a problem.  She loved Jesus and wanted to live for Him and I didn't.  That year was extremely difficult for her, but when I was discharged and we moved back to Flatwoods, she started attending FBC, Worthington.  She talked me into going to revival with her and through the great grace and mercy of God I became a Christ follower.  My life was completely turned upside down and it's never been the same again.

After about a year of soaking up the Bible like a sponge and experiencing God's awesome power and presence at work in our church I surrendered to preach.  I also wanted to go back to college and they gave me a second chance (it took me 4 semesters of straight A's just to get off probation ... that's how badly I had done).  Eventually, I was called to pastor a little church outside Catlettsburg, KY (Chadwick's Creek Missionary Baptist Church) and God blessed supernaturally.  However, I was working full-time on the railroad, going to school and trying to pastor so you can imagine I became worn-out quickly.  Sharon and I decided to take a leap of faith, quit my job, resign my church, sell our house and move to Campbellsville, KY to go to school where I could concentrate on Biblical Studies.  We made that move and the rest as they say is history.

Over the years I've been blessed to pastor some of the finest churches anywhere.  I've planted three churches, done seminary work at Criswell Center in Dallas, TX and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY.  I've been privileged to see God grow every church I've pastored and have also been blessed with some of the best staff and deacons in America.

Last year while taking some time away from the pastorate to help my oldest son, Danny, plant a church in Florence, KY I was contacted by Eastview Baptist Church in Hopkinsville, KY.  I DID NOT WANT TO GO TO HOPKINSVILLE!!!  Yet, over the course of the summer, God began to convince Sharon, my kids and finally myself that His plan for us was in Hoptown.  We came last October and it has truly been a "match made in heaven."  These are some of the finest, devoted, Christ-honoring people I've ever known.  They have a heart to reach our part of the world with the good news about Jesus Christ.  I am convinced that all my years prior to this have merely been preparation for God's plan for this city.  There is no place I'd rather be than right here in this beautiful western Kentucky city serving the Lord with what are now some of my very best friends.  I can't wait to see what God has planned!
